Collaboration: Roger Lewis

When British furniture makers Roger Lewis contacted me back in 2019, I hadn't really considered a foray into furniture. But their heritage, craftsmanship, ethos and beautiful aesthetic were enough to convince me to get involved.

The result, after a few Covid hold-ups, is Sintra, a bigger than expected, collection of chairs, pouffes, cushions and screens which feature four bespoke Tom Pigeon textile patterns and an exclusive series of foiled screenprints celebrating the colours and forms of the collection.

As you may already know, I love a collaboration. They are an amazing opportunity to work with amazing people, push your aesthetic beyond your usual house style and work with processes and objects that you might not normally have access to.

The Roger Lewis team were a dream to work with, they gave me real freedom to develop my ideas, and we worked closely to marry our expertise to make sure that each piece in the collection was exactly as it should be.

We took our initial colour inspiration from the glorious Sintra Castle in Portugal (the namesake of the first chair we worked with) and our shape inspiration straight from the cutting pattern pieces which are used to construct the chairs upholstery. The result is abstract but reminiscent of Mediterranean terrazzo - and who doesn't love terrazzo right now! I also had the opportunity to create using their brand new customiser tool, which allowed me to place my designs onto the Sintra chair and manipulate each section to create designs that flowed across the curves of the furniture... quite a lot of fun once I got the hang of it!

Launched in October 2020 the collection is available to buy directly from us here, from Roger Lewis and exclusively from our amazing friends at Truce.
